2005 Provenance Vineyards Merlot
90 Points
A fairly profound version of Merlot, this one has deep fruit and evident complexity in its nicely concentrated red cherry, currant, briar and loam aromas, and it is both supple on the palate in the manner of inviting Merlot yet sports more than ample latter palate grip for some three to six years of aging. Nuances of smoke and caramel add to its attractions and make the wine of interest both now and in the future

The vineyard site for this red dates back to the late 1800s, and the fruit source owned by the Beckstoffer family. It shows ripe fruit and a touch of coffee in the nose. The flavors combine plum with dark berry fruit. Soft tannins appear in the finish giving the wine some aging potential while being very drinkable in its youth.

An elegant light purple, this wine opens with a nose that envelops you in scents of black cherries and other red fruits, with hints of coffee and must floating around the fringes. Medium to full bodied, the wine shows great balance with supple tannins. Rich berry flavors surround notes of sour cherry that build to a finish, which is quite dry and nicely prolonged by lingering notes of "Rutherford Dust". This wine would pair very nicely with a juicy steak right now or would age quite nicely for the next five years.
