This exclusive bottling is a blend of the finest barrels of our Cabernet Sauvignon from Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. Only 195 cases have been produced and they are sold only at the winery. We hand harvested the To Kalon grapes and then hand sorted them twice at the winery for optimal quality. "Just gorgeous, this soft, plush, velvety wine is dry and smooth in tannins. Its dramatic tiers of flavors range from ripe summer blackberry to rich black currant, with a sweet, spicy jacket of smoky, buttery oak. Really beautiful for drinking now and over the next six years." - Josh Greene, December 2012
Sourced from Napa Valley’s renowned To Kalon Vineyard, our 2009 TK2 exhibits highly extracted blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis and black cherry character. Complex nuances of dark chocolate, forest floor, bay laurel and maple harmonize with the sumptuous dark-fruit flavors. With its notable combination of power and suppleness, this wine is called the “gentle giant” by our winemakers. Dense, mouth-coating tannins frame the expansive flavors, while promising long aging potential. Notes of maple and cinnamon from new French oak barrels tinge the aromas and add warmth and spice to the lingering finish.
To Kalon Vineyard was first planted in 1868 by viticulture pioneer Hamilton W. Crabb. The vineyard’s angle of sun exposure, its mesoclimate and its deep, alluvial-fan soils foster grapes with ripe, complex flavors and exquisite balance. Located in the Oakville American Viticultural Area, it is one of California’s finest sites for Cabernet Sauvignon. Our grapes come from the Beckstoffer Vineyard, a section of To Kalon Vineyard where we buy by the acre, not by the ton, so we have complete control over limiting crop size by pruning and thinning to achieve the highest quality.
Although winter and spring rainfall during the 2009 growing season was only about two-thirds of normal, the timing of the rains was excellent for the vines. These vines completed budbreak in early April and developed through a frost-free spring. Ideal conditions prevailed during bloom and berry set in May. Moderate temperatures during summer and early fall produced excellent fruit quality by allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and fully, while maintaining acidity. A fabulous vintage!
To achieve a wine of great elegance while capturing the intense To Kalon flavors, we fermented in new French oak barrels to soften and integrate the bold tannins. The balance of the grapes was cold soaked for gentle extraction and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Following extended maceration and pressing, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in barrels to round the acidity. Four rackings naturally clarified the wine, as warm oak spices married with the opulent, dark-fruit expression. We bottled the wine without fining.
