Tasting Notes

The 2015 Fortitude Cabernet presents both power and finesse in the highly extracted and concentrated aromas of dark black cherry, brambly blackberry and candied dark plum blossom. There is amazing structure, which supports an expansive palate saturated with blackberry liqueur, macerated blueberry, juicy black cherry, rich dark chocolate, rum raisin, black licorice, toasty espresso, graphite and tar. There are firm, dense tannins with lots of layers and volume, finishing with tremendous length.  This is a huge, complex wine but very lush and lithe, dancing on the palate despite the intensity due to the incredibly well-balanced focused acidity.  Mouth-filling and layered with well-integrated sweet oak nuances of vanilla bean and caramel are present from the new French oak barrels. It will reward extended aging; decant first if you can’t wait.

Vineyard Notes

To give the 2015 Fortitude its layered complexity, we selected grapes from our favorite vineyards in different soils and mesoclimates of Napa Valley. Sourcing the Cabernet, which made up just over 80% of the blend, from acclaimed Hewitt Vineyard in the Rutherford AVA, located on alluvial fan soils on bench lands near the Mayacamas Mountains, which flank Napa Valley on the west, as well as sourcing Cabernet from Star vineyard, also in Rutherford.  The next component, which made up the remaining almost 20% of the blend, was Malbec sourced from Yates vineyard in Mt. Veeder as well as Pepone vineyard in Calistoga. The Malbec contributed the dark saturated rich blue and black fruit characteristics.

Vintage Notes

Although in 2015 we received three-quarters of our normal rainfall, the cumulative effect of four years of drought in Napa Valley resulted in a light crop. Fortunately, the vintage made up for the small quantity by yielding outstanding grape quality.  The small clusters and dry, warm conditions promoted an early, condensed harvest that kept us hopping. At Provenance, we began the harvest picking Sauvignon Blanc on August 8 and wrapped up the vintage with Cabernet Sauvignon by October 12. The wines of 2015 are known for their highly concentrated, complex flavors.

Winemaking Notes

After hand harvesting the fruit, we gently sorted it first as clusters and again, after destemming, as grapes. Three days of cold soaking before fermentation gently extracted the deep purple color and rich varietal flavors from the skins. A portion of the wine was fermented in barrels, with the balance in stainless steel, to enhance the plush texture of the wine and integrate fruit and oak character. Following fermentation, extended skin contact and gentle pressing, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in barrels to round the acidity. Aging in entirely new French oak barrels wove toasty oak tones through the dark-fruit character.
