This exclusive bottling is a blend of the finest barrels of our Cabernet Sauvignon from Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. The famous To Kalon Vineyard is located on the western bench of the Oakville AVA, in the geographic center of Napa Valley. We hand harvested the To Kalon grapes and then hand sorted them twice at the winery for optimal quality. This is a powerfully structured, deeply flavored wine, capable of even greater complexity with bottle aging. This wine is worthy of a celebratory candlelight dinner. Tasting Notes

Sourced from a world-renowned Napa Valley vineyard, our 2010 Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon is not shy in revealing its sense of place. This deeply flavored wine combines refined elegance with muscular tannins that promise longevity. The saturated, complex aromas exude rum-raisin, cassis, blackberry and ripe plum, with nuances of forest loam, leather, violet and cigar box. The wine’s intense, dark-fruit flavors explode on the broad, weighted palate and then persist on the opulent finish. Beautifully integrated mocha, caramel and clove from new French oak barrels embrace the dark-fruit expression of the famed To Kalon terroir.

Vineyard Notes

We hand-harvested the grapes from the portion of To Kalon Vineyard that is owned by longtime grape grower Andy Beckstoffer. We buy the grapes by the acre, not by the ton, so we have complete control over limiting crop size by pruning and thinning to achieve the highest quality. To Kalon Vineyard was first planted in 1868 by viticulture pioneer Hamilton W. Crabb. The vineyard’s angle of sun exposure, its mesoclimate and its deep, alluvial-fan soils foster grapes with ripe, complex flavors and exquisite balance.

Vintage Notes

Heralded as a near-flawless vintage in Napa Valley, 2010 had the latest onset to harvest in several decades. We crushed the first grapes after Labor Day, about two weeks later than average. The late onset to harvest resulted from above-average rainfall and cool temperatures that persisted into May, followed by a mostly cool, foggy summer that slowed fruit maturity. But just as we started worrying that the grapes would never ripen, Mother Nature surprised us with heat spells to boost their flavors and sugar levels. The long hangtime and full maturity added up to exceptionally rich wines with exquisite balance.

Winemaking Notes

To achieve a wine of great elegance while capturing the intense To Kalon flavors, we fermented in new French oak barrels to soften and integrate the bold tannins. The balance of the grapes was cold soaked for gentle extraction and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Following extended maceration and pressing, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in barrels to round the acidity. Four rackings naturally clarified the wine, as warm oak spices married with the opulent, dark-fruit expression. We bottled the wine without fining.
